Last night, we went over to a friend's house from StrollerFit with some other friends. Neely Kate was a good little girl and had the greatest time playing in the kid pool and shockingly enjoyed playing in the big pool. She never let go of me or allowed me to move her more than five inches from my body and there was no crying which was awesome. We stayed over there for a while and once the sun had "gone night night", we moved inside to let the kids play while the adults talked.
Our hosts have this neat table with iron doors that the kids loved to play in. It reminded me of Back to the Future when Michael J. Fox tells his baby uncle that he better get used to playing behind bars. Neely Kate was opening and closing the door with her little friend, they were inside it, and as soon as they shut the door some cds fell off the top. I said, "Uh-oh, Neely Kate, what happened?" She looked at me and then it happened. She began to cry and hold her fingers. I had noticed from my angle that her fingers where not in the way of the closing door. After I announced that she was OK, I got up to go "check" on her. I asked her again what happened but she just cried and held her up left thumb, this was a different hand than she had originally grabbed. She then looked at me and switched thumbs. You could see her mind trying to figure it all out. Cds fell and she wanted me to believe that it was not her fault because her finger, which ever one she wanted at the time, had been injured.
Right before we left, she shut the door near her foot. She pretended she hurt her foot and then ...showed me her thumb again. All I could was smile so that she could not see me laughing on the inside. She is beginning to come up with stories all her own. She loves to pretend with her dollhouse but it is expanding. In my education class in college, we learned that lying, in the beginning stages, was good because it showed that the child's mind was expanding and able to comprehend more complex thoughts. That is great and all but the stories do not need to get any bigger.
